چکیده

Although the cattail mosquito, Coquillettidia perturbans (Walker) is found in North America (north of Mexico) throughout most of the United States and southern Canada, its distribution in the Rocky Mountain States is not well known and only a few collection records have been reported (Darsie and Ward 2005) (Figure 1 [inset]). Since its discovery in Idaho in Latah County (Stage et al. 1952), all known collections of the species in the state prior to this report have been in the northern panhandle counties of Boundary, Bonner, Kootenai, Latah, and Shoshone, and are within the distribution range reported by Darsie and Ward (2005). In preparation for this note, a review of the culicid collections at the following seven institutions produced no additional Idaho records of this taxon: Albertson College of Idaho (ALBRCIDA), Brigham Young University (BYUC), Utah State University (EMUS), Utah Museum of Natural History (UMNH), University of Idaho (WFBM), Washington State University (WSUC), and Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit/Smithsonian Institution (WRBU). In 2003 and 2004, West Nile virus surveillance in mosquito populations was conducted in the state by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare with the assistance of seven district health departments, some mosquito abatement districts, and the author. During the two years, token samples of trapped specimens of Cq. perturbans were saved from five counties distant from its known range in the state. All specimens saved were females and collected in CDC miniature light traps supplemented with dry ice. The new Idaho collection records (depicted in Figure 1) are as follows:

Culicidae (Diptera, Culicomorpha) from the western Brazilian Amazon: Juami-Japurá Ecological Station. With 312 trap-hours of sampling effort, 1554 specimens of Culicidae (Diptera) were collected, using CDC and Malaise traps, in nine different locations along the Juami River, within the Juami-Japurá Ecological Station, Amazonas State, Brazil. A list of mosquito species with 54 taxa is presented,...

Habitat preference of host-seeking Coquillettidia perturbans (Walker) in relation to birds and eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus in New Jersey.

Coquillettidia perturbans (Walker) has been implicated as a bridge vector of eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus in North America. Eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus epizootics occur regularly in wild birds in New Jersey with little or no involvement of susceptible dead end hosts even though high populations of Cq. perturbans are present. Several factors may limit eastern equine encephal...

Records of mosquito-parasitic mermithid nematodes in the northcentral United States.

Mermithid parasites (Nematoda: Mermithidae) were observed in 11 mosquito species in 22 counties of Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. Natural hosts included adult Aedes vexans, Ae. canadensis, Ae. cinereus, Ae. diantaeus, Ae. punctor, Anopheles punctipennis and Coquillettidia perturbans and larvae of Ae. abserratus, Ae. canadensis, Ae. cinereus, Ae. communis, Ae. diantaeus, Ae. p...

Mermithid nematode parasites of Coquillettidia perturbans in Massachusetts.

We surveyed 792 larval and 12,400 adult Coquillettidia perturbans for mermithid nematodes in 1990. Collections were made from cattail marshes in the greater Boston area. No mermithids were found in the adult mosquitoes, nor in larvae collected in mid-season, but 3 were found in larvae collected during September and October. This is only the second recorded occurrence of mermithids in Cq. pertur...

Molecular phylogeny and evolutionary relationships among mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) from the northeastern United States based on small subunit ribosomal DNA (18S rDNA) sequences.

The phylogenetic relationships of Culicidae native to the northeastern United States were investigated by analyzing small subunit ribosomal DNA (18S rDNA) sequences obtained from 39 species representing nine genera. Molecular phylogenies were consistent with traditional classifications based on morphological characters except for the placements of Psorophora Robineau-Desvoidy and Uranotaenia Ly...
